The Radial Distribution of the Kuiper Belt
نویسندگان
چکیده
We examine the radial distribution of the Kuiper Belt objects (KBOs) using a method that is insensitive to observational bias effects. This technique allows the use of the discovery distances of all KBOs, independent of orbital classification or discovery circumstance. We verify the presence of an outer edge to the Kuiper Belt, as reported in other works, and we measure this edge to be at given any physically plausible R p 47 1 AU model of the size distribution. We confirm that this outer edge is due to the classical KBOs, the most numerically dominant observationally. In addition, we find that current surveys do not preclude the presence of a second, unobserved Kuiper Belt beyond . A Derivation of the Luminosity Function of the Kuiper Belt from a Broken Power-Law Size Distribution
We have derived a model of the Kuiper belt luminosity function exhibited by a broken power-law size distribution. This model allows direct comparison of the observed luminosity function to the underlying size distribution. We discuss the importance of the radial distribution model in determining the break diameter. We determine a best-fit break-diameter of the Kuiper belt size-distribution of 3...
متن کاملThe Small Numbers of Large Kuiper Belt Objects
We explore the brightness distribution of the largest and brightest (m(R)<22) Kuiper belt objects (KBOs). We construct a luminosity function of the dynamically excited or hot Kuiper belt (orbits with inclinations > 5) from the very brightest to m(R)=23. We find for m(R). 23, a single slope appears to describe the luminosity function. We estimate ∼12 KBOs brighter than m(R)∼19.5 are present in t...

Our current knowledge of the dynamical structure of the Kuiper Belt is reviewed here. Numerical results on long term orbital evolution and dynamical mechanisms underlying the transport of objects out of the Kuiper Belt are discussed. Scenarios about the origin of the highly non-uniform orbital distribution of Kuiper Belt objects are described, as well as the constraints these provide on the for...
متن کامل0 The Size Distribution of the Kuiper Belt Objects
The size distribution is determined directly from the current known Kuiper Belt Objects (KBOs). We found that there is a peak for the size distribution around 230 km in diameter. For the objects larger than 230 km, the KBOs populate as N(s) ∝ s as we see in Jewitt et al. (1998). For the objects smaller than 230 km, we found N(s) ∝ s. This result from the current observational data is new and ve...
متن کاملThe Inclination Distribution of the Kuiper Belt
We develop a general method for determining the unbiased inclination distribution of the Kuiper belt using only the inclination and latitude of discovery of known Kuiper belt objects (KBOs). These two parameters are well determined for each discovered object, so we can use all 379 known KBOs (as of 2001 January 1)Èwithout knowing the objectÏs precise orbit, area, detection efficiency, or the la...
